History
The Manhood Project (TMP) was founded in November of 2011 by Author, Inspirational Speaker and Certified Youth & Adult Life Strategies Coach- Phil Black. Starting as a pilot program, Coach Black began supporting a small group of 20 young men at Clark Preparatory Academy on Detroit's East Side. Today, The Manhood Project supports more than 150 young men throughout six schools and numerous community partnerships.
TMP was created as a testimony to the positive role models that Coach Black himself encountered. He saw a need to extend that same influence to young men in communities across the country. |
The 5 Virtues of Men
Personal virtues are characteristics valued as promoting collective and individual greatness. Drawing on both direct and indirect lessons learned from the positive influences in his life, Coach Black identified five essential- key ingredients all men need.

LOVE
"Learning to love yourself makes it possible to love others."

RESPECT
"When you give respect, you are more likely to receive it."

COURAGE
"Having the strength to be yourself, no matter who is watching."

PROVISION
"Every man must possess the ability and willingness to provide for himself and for his family."

PROTECTION
"We must protect all that has been entrusted to our care. Especially those who cannot protect themselves."
"We must protect all that has been entrusted to our care. Especially those who cannot protect themselves."
The Creed of Men
We love according to the commandment.
We know respect must start from within, given and earned, before it can be received.
We are courageous enough to be ourselves and not follow the negative influences of others.
We vow to provide for our households while helping others in need.
We protect all that is entrusted to our care and those who cannot defend themselves.
In times of fear and doubt, we remind ourselves and each other;
"You don’t have to be perfect. But you must be present."
